USA 2-0 New Zealand — FULL RECAP
Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan provided the goals (HIGHLIGHTS HERE) as the USWNT began their quest for a fourth straight Olympic gold medal, as well as to become the first national team to win the Women’s World Cup and Olympic gold in back-to-back summers.
Mallory Pugh (ankle injury) left the game not long after halftime. The 18-year-old’s status for Saturday’s clash with France (Watch live on NBCSN and NBCOlympics.com) is unknown at this time.
Canada 2-0 Australia — FULL RECAP
Canada used the earliest goal in Olympic history (20 seconds, scored by Janine Beckie), and the 163rd career international goal of Christine Sinclair’s legendary career, to overcome a 19th-minute red card (Shelina Zadorsky) and put the Canadians in prime position to advance as one of the top-two finishing teams in Group F.
Brazil 3-0 China — FULL RECAP
Monica (36th minute), Andressa (59th) and Cristiane (90th) provided the goals as Brazil overwhelmed China and took commanding control of Group E. Men like their male compatriots, the Brazilian women have never won Olympic gold in their country’s history. The Olympic hosts look good value to do the Olympic double in Rio, at least one game into the tournament.
