Early Friday morning it was announced that Texas has suspended sophomore guard Martez Walker indefinitely following his arrest on a misdemeanor assault charge. Late Wednesday, a woman who stated to authorities that she was Walker’s girlfriend was transported to an Austin-area hospital for treatment after being assaulted in a campus dorm room.

According to the report the disagreement allegedly occurred because Walker was upset with the fact that his girlfriend “went to a happy hour with a friend, a male colleague.”

She said that Walker became very angry when he found out she was with him and they started to argue, the affidavit says. The girlfriend then told Walker that she wanted to get something to eat but that Walker wouldn’t let her leave the San Jacinto Residence Hall dorm room they were in, the affidavit says.

She then slapped Walker one time, saying she was “tired of this,” the document says, and then hid her face and went into the fetal position on the couch because she said she knew from previous fights with Walker that he was going to hit her.

She told police that Walker then punched her “hard” four times on her left side, dragged her by her arms and threw her out of his room, telling her he was done with her, the affidavit says.

“We are aware of the situation with Martez and he is cooperating with campus police officials,” Texas head coach Rick Barnes said in a statement according to the Austin American-Statesman. “We have consistently stressed to all of our student-athletes for a long time that any behavior in which women are not treated with respect will not be tolerated.

“Pending resolution, Martez has been suspended indefinitely from our basketball program and will not participate in any team functions.”

As a freshman the 6-foot-4 Walker, a native of Detroit, played just under 13 minutes per contest and averaged 4.7 points and 2.3 rebounds.
