FAU CB arrested in theft of 400 pounds of copper wire

An already weird college football offseason has gotten a little bit weirder thanks to the efforts of a Florida Atlantic football player.

According to TCPalm.com, cornerback Cortez Ash and another individual were arrested this weekend in connection to the theft of 400 pounds of copper wire (not pictured). As intriguing as the charge is, the how of their arrests is head-scratching and, quite honestly, elicits a bit of a dumbfounded chuckle. And a sad shaking of the head.

The website reports that the bumbling duo “borrowed” the copper from a scrap yard at approximately 3:15 a.m. Saturday morning. We use the word “borrowed” because, unbelievably, the pair returned to the same scrap yard a few hours later and attempted to sell the material back to the business from which is what allegedly lifted.

A wrench was tossed squarely in the midst of the criminal mastermind’s plans, however, as there was video surveillance at the scrap yard and the owner of the joint called 911 after recognizing the individuals from the tape. After the call was placed, Ash and Donovan Roberts were taken into custody.

The copper wire, valued at more than $1,200, led to three charges against the two individuals: burglary of a business, third-degree grand theft and dealing in stolen property. Ash was reportedly released on a $7,500 bond.

“Naturally, I’m disturbed to hear about the arrest of one of our freshmen football players,” head coach Howard Schnellenberger said in a statement obtained by FAUOwlAccess.com. “Needless to say there is much more to be done in the investigation. We will follow the proceedings closely and will determine what actions should be taken.”

Ash used his redshirt last season as a true freshman, but was expected to compete for a starting in summer camp.
