The 2014 NFL Draft is now a thing of history, and history was made in the process. Missouri defensive end Michael Sam was the final player from the SEC drafted by an NFL team (St. Louis Rams), becoming the first openly gay player to be drafted. He was also the SEC’s 49th pick of the draft, clinching the top spot in the conference standings.
Though the SEC fell shy of matching last year’s record total, the SEC’s 49 players were the most from any one conference. The ACC gave the SEC a good run earlier in the draft, but the SEC managed to battle back and pull away in the later rounds on Saturday. The ACC sent 42 players through the draft, good for second in the conference pecking order.
