Stephen Morris cleared for offseason workouts

Miami quarterback Stephen Morris did not participate in the Hurricanes’ spring drills as he recovered from offseason back surgery. Just over three months from the start of the season, however, Morris has been cleared to return to “voluntary” offseason workouts.

Coach Al Golden announced Morris was medically cleared at the ACC spring meetings and expected him to challenge Ryan Williams for the starting job this fall.

I see a competition at every position to be honest with you,” Golden said. “I wouldn’t want it to be any other way, and it wouldn’t be fair to portray it any other way. They’ll work out for the next 90 days and then they’ll have training camp to prove themselves. They’ll have practices and two scrimmages, both will work with the ones, and then we’ll name a starter from there.”

Williams, a Memphis transfer, impressed in his first meaningful spring with the Hurricanes. Barring injuries or off-the-field issues, it appears Morris or Williams will lead Miami this fall over backups Gary Crow and Preston Dewey.
