Surprise: Wilson named Wisconsin’s No. 1 QB

What impeccable timing.

Just as we had posted that recently acquired Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson had been named one of four co-captains for the Badgers, an official release from UW confirmed what many in the media had already been speculating ever since Wilson arrived in Madison nearly two months ago: that he would be tabbed as the starting quarterback.

And he has been.

Wilson sits atop the latest depth chart just 10 days from UW’s opening game against UNLV that literally helps kick off the 2011 college football season.

Positioned behind Wilson is sophomore Jon Budmayr, the supposedly biggest challenge to Wilson’s job who was able to continue practicing in preseason camp following a burst bursa sac in his elbow.

When Wilson officially gave his word to Wisconsin in June, it was generally assumed by practically all except coach Bret Bielema that the senior transfer from North Carolina State would become the starter. Wilson chose the Badgers over Auburn and delayed a professional baseball career with the Colorado Rockies franchise.
