WVU dips into the NFL for latest coaching hire

On the same day they commence spring practice, West Virginia apparently has a new member of its coaching staff to break in.

First reported by Yahoo!‘s Tom Dienhart, and later confirmed by ESPN‘s Bruce Feldman, the Mountaineers have hired Daron Roberts as their new special teams coordinator/inside receivers coach. The school has yet to confirm the hiring.

Roberts has spent the past two seasons as the assistant secondary coach of the Detroit Lions. Prior to that, Roberts was an assistant for two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

This will be Roberts’ first coaching job at the collegiate level.

What’s most impressive about Roberts, though, is his educational background: he earned a Master of Public Policy degree from the Harvard Kennedy School and then graduated from Harvard Law.

UPDATED 7:13 p.m. ET: West Virginia has confirmed Roberts’ hiring, saying in a press release that he will be “handling the wide receivers and working extensively with the special teams.”
