Maples

Maples, 30, was once one of the most intriguing relief prospects in the sport. He’s struggled mightily in his appearances with Triple-A Lehigh Valley; posting a 6.59 ERA and walking more hitters (22) than strikeouts (18) over 14 1/3 innings.

It seems noteworthy that the Phils sent two infielders down and kept Bryson Stott around. Torreyes has been a favorite of manager Joe Girardi for a while and will probably wind up back in the majors at some point.

The right-hander posted a 2.59 ERA over 31 1/3 innings with 40 strikeouts and 25 walks for Cubs last season. Details on the contract are not yet known.

Maples was designated for assignment by Chicago on Sunday and ultimately passed through waivers unclaimed. The 29-year-old right-hander holds a career 5.10 ERA in 59 relief appearances at the major league level.

Chicago activated Keegan Thompson and Nico Hoerner from the injured list Sunday, leaving Maples without a spot on the 40-man roster. The right-hander was recently activated from the injured list after missing a month with a blister, but will now head to waivers where another major league team can claim him. The 29-year-old posted a 2.59 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 31 1/3 innings this season with 40 strikeouts.

Maples will return to the Cubs’ bullpen after missing just over two months due to a blister issue. He’ll operate in middle relief over the final month of the 2021 campaign.

Maples has missed the last month with a strained triceps. Kyle Ryan was sent down as the corresponding move.

Maples has made six appearances during a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa and figures to be back up to operate out of the Cubs bullpen very soon. The 29-year-old righty has been out since mid-June with a right triceps strain.
