Michelle Wie may have “finally” won her first major Sunday at the U.S. Women’s Open, but keep this in mind: She’s one month younger than Annika Sorenstam when she captured the first of her 10 major titles.
At 24 years, 8 months and 11 days, Wie earned her first major in her 38th attempt. Though she may have been older, it didn’t take Sorenstam nearly as long to break through. Annika won a major in her fifth major start, at the 1995 U.S. Women’s Open. She’d win the following year’s Open too, then rattle off eight more major wins between the 2001 Kraft and 2006 Open.
At 24, Wie is also younger than Lorena Ochoa (25) and current world No. 1 Stacy Lewis (26) when they earned their first major.
Ochoa was making her 24th career start in a major when she captured the 2007 Women’s British, then came back the following spring and won the ’08 Kraft in her next major start. She abruptly retired in April 2010.
Lewis, meanwhile, won the 2011 Kraft in her 11th career start in a major championship. Ten majors later, she won the 2013 Women’s British.
