AVONDALE, La. – The difference between this year and last?
Billy Horschel didn’t need to ponder that question long. He held his hands about 2 feet apart.
“The hole was like this size right here,” he said.
And right now, he said, pinching his fingers together, “the hole looks about that big.”
Horschel was one of the breakout stars of 2013, winning here at the Zurich Classic and finishing in the top 10 in seven other events, including a T-4 at the U.S. Open.
This season hasn’t been quite as fruitful. He has just one top 10 in 14 starts, and that came at the limited-field Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

Though his long game remains one of the best on Tour – seventh in total driving, third in ball-striking – he has fallen outside the top 100 in strokes gained-putting. Last year, he was 28th.
“There’s not much more I can do,” he said. “I’m doing everything I can, and it’s just when they start falling, hopefully they fall in bunches like they did last year.”
