PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – After a career-best finish of T-37 – twice – at The Players Championship, Bubba Watson stated earlier this week that he’d enter the event with some modest goals.
“Maybe a 36th this year,” he joked. “Get my best tournament ever here.”
Following a third-round 2-under 70 that left him at 5-under 211, he remained in a joking mood. When asked whether he’s adjusted his goal, Watson maintained, “No, no, I’ve still got a few shots to play with.”
With three rounds of par or better, he should be on the verge of his best finish here.

“Truthfully, I’m trying to be better than that,” he said of that 36th-place goal. “After yesterday’s slow finish, I was trying to just try to get to the top 25. … But then after making all those birdies [he carded seven on Saturday, including four in a row on the back nine], yeah, obviously we’re trying to get a top 10. And if we can do better than that, it would be better, get a top five maybe.
“But winning the golf tournament’s really probably out of the question, unless something heroic happens tomorrow. But a top 10 is very reasonable, if I can play halfway decent.”
Watson needs a win or solo second-place finish to potentially become the world’s No. 1-ranked player.
