RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Becky Brewerton of Wales was the early leader in the clubhouse Thursday at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, signing for a 3-under-par 69.
A two-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, and two-time European Solheim Cup player, Brewerton’s aim is to play the LPGA next year. Making last year’s Solheim Cup team qualified her for this week’s Kraft Nabisco. She plans to make her third attempt through LPGA Qualifying School this fall.
“That’s what this year is pointing toward,” Brewerton said.
A win this week would win Brewerton LPGA membership for this season and next. Also, she can earn membership for 2011 if she makes enough money as a non-member this year to finish among the top 80 on the LPGA money list.
Brewerton, 27, is a long hitter, but she said Mission Hills’ Dinah Shore Tournament Course tested her length.
“I don’t remember a course where I hit so many 5- and 6-irons into greens,” Brewerton said. “It was a little bit of a shock.”
