Players Checking out Bethpage but not Furyk

DUBLIN, Ohio – Geoff Ogilvy slipped into Long Island for an early peek at Bethpage’s Black course on Monday and earlier this week Tiger Woods confirmed he will make a scouting trip to the site of this month’s U.S. Open before championship week.

It has become standard practice for players to get a jump on their tournament prep work, but New Yorkers shouldn’t expect to see Jim Furyk any time soon. The 2003 U.S. Open champion said he’ll take his time getting to Bethpage, probably getting to the course on the Sunday before the tournament.

“I actually went to Bethpage early last time. It was about 47 degrees and raining. It was a dream. I hit a 3-wood in every hole,” said Furyk, who opened with rounds of 73-80 and missed the cut at the ’02 U.S. Open. “It didn’t work that time, so I’m going a different route.”
