Rain Washes Out Play at Sybase

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Inclement weather continued to wreak havoc at the Sybase Classic on Friday, and the first round was suspended again without a shot being taken.

Players who need to finish the first round are scheduled to tee off at 7:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday, with the second round slated to begin 15 minutes later.

Rain has been a constant in the month of May in the north-east part of the U.S.

There has been no decision yet to shorten the event to 54 holes.

An 83-minute rain delay on Thursday forced the eventual suspension of the first round shortly after 8 p.m. local time with 15 players remaining on the course.

Natalie Gulbis, who is still looking for her first LPGA win, opened with a 3-under-par 68 in her first round to grab a piece of the clubhouse lead.

Gulbis was joined atop the leaderboard at Wykagyl Country Club by Beth Bauer and 2003 champion Hee-Won Han.

Nancy Scranton posted a 2-under-par 69 and was joined in a tie for fourth place by Kim Saiki, Teresa Lu and Allison Hanna. Soo Young Yoo is also at minus-2 through 17 holes.

Women’s world No. 1 Annika Sorenstam and defending champion Paula Creamer share 24th place at 1-over-par 72. Sorenstam is coming off her first missed cut since 2002, while Creamer is back to defend the title that made her the youngest winner on the LPGA Tour in 53 years.
