RENO, Nev. -- The PGA TOUR is offering the Reno-Tahoe Open a four-year contract extension that would keep the tournament running at least through 2010, and tournament director Jim Kline said Saturday he expects to have the deal sealed within a month.
Played the week after the PGA Championship since its inception in 1999, the tournament will move to the week before the final major next year and grab some additional incentive for those not competing in the World Golf Championship to make the trip to Nevada, he said.
Montreux Golf and Country Club will host the tournament in a slot that falls either the last weekend in July or the first weekend in August, next summer Aug. 2-5.
The new spot will be part of the FedEx Cup season, with the winner at Reno picking up 12,500 points compared to the 25,000 points that go to winners of tournaments that are not opposite another event.
‘We feel very fortunate to continue our association with the tour, especially with the earlier changes this year with five events removed from the regular season and four events being moved out of the FedEx Cup competition,’ Kline said. He said tour executives would be in town Sunday to make the offer.
The FedEx Cup season includes 33 tourneys beginning in January and running through the middle of August, followed by a four-tournament playoff that will reward the overall winner with $10 million.
Kline said that should make the tourney more attractive to some players.
‘We might get some players that want to go into the PGA Championship strong, so they come and play. And since you get the points, that’s something you can’t really not take advantage of,’ he said.
