MACHRIHANISH, Scotland – In 1964 Herbert Warren Wind wrote a series of stories in The New Yorker entitled ‘North to the Links of Dornoch.’ The dean of golf writers was inspired by a trip to the extreme reaches of Scottish golf at Royal Dornoch and it set the standard for golf travel writing in the process.
GolfChannel.com’s journey to Scotland’s west coast is not nearly as lofty as Wind’s, but similarly motivated. Starting at Machrihanish Golf Club, the plan is to stray off the beaten path in search of something outside the normal tourist rota of St. Andrews, Troon, Carnoustie.
As our golf concierge Dove Jones pointed out on the eve of our trip, there are plenty of undiscovered golf gems in Scotland, you just have to know where to look.
