A long Sunday at Kiawah. The year’s final major. Oh, the possibilities. The Golf Guy breaks down a handful of the best possible winning scenarios come sundown Sunday at the PGA Championship:
Rory McIlroy – After his breakout major championship romp at the 2011 U.S. Open, the wunderkind from Northern Ireland has struggled mightily at the ensuing five major championships. As for a victory at the PGA Championship? At age 23, more major titles than Tiger Woods at the same age. And halfway to the career grand slam - yes, that sounds strange for a 23-year-old.
Adam Scott – Perhaps the most heartwarming story that could happen. Following his utter meltdown at the British Open – four strokes up with four holes to play, only to cough up his first major – Scott has rebounded like a champ and has put himself in position for one of the greatest rebounds in history. Kiawah Island ... Bob Marley ... Redemption Song.
Vijay Singh – Move over, Julius Boros. Singh – already the best all-time over-40 player in history – could put an exclamation point on that fact by becoming the oldest player to capture a major championship. Boros was 48 years, 4 months, 18 days old when he won the 1968 PGA Championship. Vijay, at age 49, would become the new Old Tom Morris. And then his caddie could once again break out the ‘Tiger Who?’ hats.
Tiger Woods – The ‘major drought’ would be over. Major victory No. 15. The chase for Jack would once again be thrown into major overdrive. And Sean Foley would be seen doing cartwheels into the Atlantic Ocean.
Carl Pettersson – A victory for the Swedish-born, newly minted U.S. citizen, could perhaps mean this: a nice sponsorship with In-N-Out Burger. Burgers for everybody! And ultimately, the USGA and R&A looking into bellies – not just of the putter variety – that should be legal.
