Acquired from the Marlins and signed to a one-year, $3.4 million contract this winter, Jeremy Hermida was brought in to be the Red Sox’s fourth outfielder and could have been in line for a ton of playing time given the team’s amazing number of injuries. Instead he hit just .203/.257/.348 in 52 games while missing time with various injuries of his own, including fractured ribs, and yesterday the Red Sox released him from Triple-A rather than give him a September call-up. Hermida is a former top prospect and hit .296/.369/.501 as a 23-year-old for the Marlins in 2007, but he’s batted just .246/.324/.392 in three seasons and 1,221 plate appearances since then and is now a 26-year-old with a .755 career OPS. Hermida cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on July 31 and will almost surely have to settle for a minor-league deal at this point.
Even with all their injuries, Red Sox release Jeremy Hermida
