Jeremy Hefner’s elbow injury might not just cost him the rest of this season, but also a large chunk of 2014.
According to Marc Carig of New York Newsday, Hefner is dealing with a partial tear in the medial collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. He’s scheduled to be examined by doctors on Monday, but Mets general manager Sandy Alderson hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Tommy John surgery.
If Tommy John surgery is required, Hefner would likely be sidelined until late in the 2014 season.
Hefner wasn’t originally slated to be a part of the Mets’ rotation this season, but he has done a respectable job for the most part, posting a 4.34 ERA and 99/37 K/BB ratio over 130 2/3 innings. He had a 9.03 ERA over his final five starts before hitting the disabled list.
