Mike Cameron returns to disabled list, but putting off surgery for now

Mike Cameron is headed back to the disabled list with the same abdominal injury that kept him out for much of the season’s first two months. He played 32 games and hit .252/.310/.409 in between DL stints, but may not make it back this season because Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that “the lower abdominal tear he suffered in spring training has become aggravated to the point where it’s getting wider.” Cameron will apparently need surgery one way or another, but for now he’ll put off going under the knife in the hopes that rest and rehab will allow him to return late in the season. The surgery isn’t expected to impact his timetable for 2011, so delaying a decision is not believed to be an added risk. Daniel Nava has been recalled from Triple-A to replace Cameron on the 25-man roster and the Red Sox are hoping that Jacoby Ellsbury will be cleared to come off the DL later this week.
