Red Sox manager John Farrell called Wade Miley’s outburst “unacceptable”

On Thursday, Red Sox starter Wade Miley struggled against the Orioles, serving up five runs over four innings. Manager John Farrell decided to take Miley out of the game, something the left-hander didn’t like. The two had a heated argument in the dugout before continuing the conversation in private, away from TV cameras.

Per Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston, Farrell called Miley’s outburst “unacceptable”.

“What happened in the dugout last night was a pitcher who was competitive [and] obviously did not like the decision to be removed from the game,” Farrell said. “But the outburst in the dugout was something that’s, you know, unacceptable. I won’t stand for it. As a result, we met immediately following the game.”

Miley accepted blame for what transpired, saying, “I handled it terrible.” He added, “I lost my head last night.”

Miley was acquired from the Diamondbacks in December, but has performed poorly over 12 starts with the Red Sox. He carries a 5.07 ERA with a 42/21 K/BB ratio in 65 2/3 innings. The Red Sox rotation as a whole has a 4.74 ERA, the worst mark in the American League and fourth-worst in baseball. As a result, it’s no surprise they are 27-34 in last place in the AL East.
