Kirk Niewenhuis drew a leadoff hit-by-pitch, Kevin Plawecki singled to right-center, and then Jacob deGrom plated a run with a groundball to first base as the Mets stopped Zack Greinke’s consecutive scoreless innings streak at 45 2/3 in the bottom of the third inning Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.
Dodgers center fielder Joc Pederson could have made a better play on Plawecki’s ball to right-center and Adrian Gonzalez could have made a better play on deGrom’s grounder to first, but this is baseball. You need a help from your friends to put together any kind of scoreless innings stretch.
Greinke’s streak started on June 13, and he hadn’t allowed a runner to reach third base since June 23.
It’s the sixth-longest consecutive scoreless innings streak of all time and the fourth-longest streak since 1920, behind only Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale, and the MLB record holder Orel Hershiser.
