Twins purchased the contracts of RHP Scott Tyler and LHP Dave Gassner.
Not to be confused with Scott Baker, Tyler, a 2001 second-round pick, went 7-4 with a 2.60 ERA for Single-A Quad City last season. He’s not the prospect that Baker is, but he’s certainly worthy of the 40-man roster spot. Gassner’s surprising season with Triple-A Rochester (16-8, 3.41 ERA) also gets him on the list. He has nothing more than fifth-starter upside, but he’s someone who might contribute in 2005.

Scott Tyler struck out nine in six scoreless innings for Single-A Fort Myers yesterday.
Tyler has been slow to progress since the Twins made him a second-round pick in 2001, but he’s a big righty with with a good fastball and an impressive strikeout rate. This year, he’s 5-3 with a 3.72 ERA, 66 H and 71/26 K/BB in 75 IP for Fort Myers. He’s a candidate to end up in the pen.

Marlins optioned RHP Scott Tyler to Double-A Carolina.
Tyler didn’t make an appearance in two days with the Marlins.

Marlins recalled RHP Scott Tyler from Double-A Carolina.
Tyler is getting the nod here in no small part because he’s already on the 40-man roster. The 24-year-old, who was picked up from the Twins in the Luis Castillo trade, has given up three runs, walked seven and struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings for Carolina. He’ll likely only be on the roster until a starter is needed on Sunday.

Scott Tyler left his start for Single-A Quad City last night after aggravating an ankle injury.
Tyler, a 2001 second-round pick, pitched three scoreless innings before leaving. He is 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA in four starts since returning from his second stint this season on the disabled list.

Right-hander Scott Tyler was traded from the Twins to the Marlins in a three-player deal.
Tyler, 23, was 7-8 with a 3.95 ERA, 106 H and 109/48 K/BB in 118 1/3 IP for Single-A Fort Myers last season. He’s had trouble with conditioning and command since being drafted in the second round in 2001, so he might fit best as a reliever. He’ll move up to Double-A next season.
