Kevin Durant tells fans to chill, him signing with Jay-Z doesn’t mean he bolts OKC

Kevin Durant is a big star playing in a small market — that always makes small market fans a little edgy. The list of players forcing their way out of small markets to bigger ones is a tradition that dates back to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in Milwaukee, or probably earlier.

So when Durant switched agents to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, a few OKC fans thought that was a sign. Jay-Z is as big city as it gets, the guy wrote a New York anthem for crying out loud.

Durant wants you all to chill. He’s not going anywhere.

That’s what he told the Oklahoman.

“He has nothing to do with if I’m going to leave OKC or none of that,” Durant told The Oklahoman. “I heard that before so put that out on the table. He has nothing to do with that. He knows his lane with me. Their team knows their lane with me. And they’re letting me handle the basketball part. I would tell fans not to worry about that at all.”

Durant is about the most grounded star you could get. He signed a five-year extension with the Thunder as quickly as he could then just announced it on twitter casually. He’s got three years left on his deal and he’s not going to big time OKC.

Now, if the team can’t win a ring and can’t put enough pieces around him to do so — if he has good basketball reasons to leave — that’s another matter. He wants to win. But it’s not about the city. So relax.
