Will Bynum doesn’t want to just be a spark off the bench, he wants to start

You think the backcourt for the Detroit Pistons at the start of the season is set: Rodney Stuckey at the point, Rip Hamilton at the two, Tayshaun Prince at the three.

Will Bynum would like his name in the conversation, thank you very much, as he told the Detroit Free Press.

“I’m looking forward to a great year,” Bynum said. “I don’t think for one second that the money I’m making makes me a reserve. I just want to clear that up from the beginning.

“I think that the money that I’m making gives me the opportunity to excel, and I’m trying to do it.”

That deal is for three years at $9.75 million.

Bynum is the best pure point guard on the Pistons roster. If -- and really when -- the Pistons move Prince or Hamilton (or both), Bynum may get his shot. Bynum at the one, Stuckey at the two is a good, if a bit small, backcourt.

Until then, Bynum may have to still excel off the bench.
