Wizards not trading JaVale McGee to move up in draft

JaVale McGee block

It probably went down something like this: The Washington Wizards called the Minnesota Timberwolves to inquire about what it would take to get the No. 2 pick (because likely No. 2 pick Derrick Williams would look good running on the break next to John Wall). The Timberwolves thought about it.

Then they asked for JaVale McGee.

That’s the end of that, according to Michael Lee at the Washington Post.

But while the Timberwolves have asked for him, dealing McGee isn’t considered an option for the Wizards in order to move into the top three in the June 23 NBA draft, the sources said. Trading McGee hasn’t even been discussed internally, according to the sources -- especially since many within the organization believe that the 23-year-old McGee would be deemed a top three-to-five pick if he were in the draft this year.

McGee would be three at worst, probably two in the conversation for one. And McGee is a guy whose athleticism also is a good fit next to Wall, plus McGee is just 23 and still improving (and maturing, which is the larger issue). There are no centers in this draft near as good as McGee, and if you’re going to trade him for a smaller player the smaller player better be amazing. This is not that kind of draft.

Now, if they Wolves will take on Andre Blatche.....
