Try, try again: Wings send Weiss for another AHL conditioning stint

No, this is not a repeat: Stephen Weiss is headed to AHL Grand Rapids on a conditioning stint.

The oft-injured Detroit forward, who’s played just 25 games over the last two seasons, is reportedly on his way to the minors for the second time this season (Weiss hurt his groin during the first conditioning stint in late October).

More, from MLive:

Weiss will be back on the ice for the Griffins Friday in Lake Erie on a conditioning assignment. After that game, the Red Wings will decide whether to play him the next night in Grand Rapids.

If all goes well, he’ll be available for the Red Wings on Monday.

Weiss must be activated from injured reserve before starting his conditioning stint. That means the Red Wings must trim a player from their roster, unless they put someone else on IR. If nobody gets injured, they might be forced to send Tomas Jurco to Grand Rapids, since he is their only waiver-exempt player.

Weiss has been an unmitigated disaster since signing a five-year, $24.5 million deal with Detroit in the summer of ’13. Injuries have played a major role in his lack of production, though he’s hardly endeared himself to head coach Mike Babcock, who made him a healthy scratch repeatedly to start this season.
