In the third period of a tied hockey game between the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers, it looked like defenseman Mike Green suddenly had a sure goal.
Green was breaking in all alone on Panthers’ goalie Tim Thomas when the veteran puck stopper suddenly stumbled as he was backing up. Green looked to take advantage, making a move to the forehand with almost the entire net to shoot at. But the 39-year-old Thomas, in an act of desperation, threw out his left arm and denied Green as he tried to slide the puck along the ice and into the open cage.
Now, as great a save as it was, it only prolonged the inevitable, as Alex Ovechkin scored just seconds later to give the Capitals a 5-4 win.
