Are you ready for some (high school) football?

OK, we’re still six days away from popping the top on the 2009 regular season.

But, tonight, you have a chance to watch a couple of high-profile college quarterback prospects take the field against each other in their respective school’s season opener.

Oscar Smith (VA) High School will take on Venice (FL) High on ESPU tonight at 6. (Of course, you might want to DVR it so you can watch the six o’clock news on your local NBC affiliate, the NBC Nightly News, whatever syndicated programs are on in the seven o’clock hour on your local NBC affiliate, then NBC’s stellar prime time NBC lineup.)

Oscar Smith features Phillip Sims, an Alabama commitment, while Venice has Florida-bound Trey Burton under center.

Over 10,000 fans are expected to attend the shindig.

“Friday night will not be normal,” Oscar Smith head coach Richard Morgan told the Virginian-Pilot. “It’s going to be a huge event. The kids are so excited, but I don’t want them to be over-hyped so that they don’t have anything left for the game. But it’s a big thing.”

So, if you are jonesing for some football, you might want to take in the high school action tonight. After getting a heaping helping of NBC TV fare, of course.
