Last month we made mention of the big recruiting score by Jeff Tedford and his Cal Bears, luring highly touted defensive tackle Cassius Marsh into the fold. Even with offers from much of the Pac-10, including the hometown Trojans and Bruins, Marsh was ready to make his college decision. But after reading into the situation, we specifically called out Marsh for his lukewarm commitment, and questioned the likelihood that this relationship would last after reading his quotes.(I’m giving Reggie Bush and Kim Kardashian a better shot at making it...)"Cal told me I don’t have any restrictions and they actually are encouraging me to take my visits,” Marsh said in early April. “They said they want me to look around because they’re confident Cal is the best place for me and I’m sure I’ll do that but it’s going to take a lot for anyone to beat out Cal."Even then, I thought it was a waste of time for both coaches and recruits to make these types of commitments. And now, just over a month later, word breaks at Scout.com that -- shocker! -- Cassius Marsh has backed out of his commitment to Cal, reopening his recruiting."I decommitted from Cal,” Marsh told Scout.com. “I just want to check out other schools. I’m seriously thinking about the SEC. New schools I really like are LSU and Oklahoma. I’m still looking at USC and Tennessee, but Cal is still number one."I’ve got nothing personally against Marsh, but here’s a kid who has already switched high school allegiances, most likely for all the wrong reasons. So whether or not he’s just making announcements to get his time in the recruiting sun, he’s really just proving what a mockery the recruiting game has become. Here’s hoping Marsh doesn’t become this year’s Bryce Brown.
