It’s not exactly a state secret that Pete Carroll has a deep fondness for modern technology. His use of Twitter is damn-near legendary.
However, the Sothern Cal coach’s fondness doesn’t extend to some computers. Specifically, the ones used in determining the BcS rankings.
While his Trojans are ranked No. 4 in both the Harris and USA Today coaches’ poll, the computers that serve as the third part of the postseason equation have USC way down at No. 11. It’s that discrepancy and No. 7 initial ranking that led Carroll -- a known proponent of a playoff system -- to take a few shots at the current system for determining a national champion.
“My take is there is a big discrepancy with the computer polls (and the human polls),” Carroll said.”It’s a huge discrepancy. I would think that gives you reason to question the end result. Why would there be a big discrepancy?...
“Is the goal to find the team with the best record or the best team?”
Of course, if the Trojans would’ve taken care of business against a 3-4 Washington team, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion.
