With starter Zac Robinson out with an injury, quarterback Alex Cate started for Oklahoma State in their Nov. 19 game against Colorado.
Following an 0-for-9, one-interception performance in the first half, Cate was yanked at halftime in favor of then-sophomore Brandon Weeden. Weeden ultimately got OSU out of their first-half hole and led them to a come-from-behind win over the Buffaloes.
And, as it has ultimately turned out, those nine incompletions were the final passes of Cates’ Cowboys career.
According to both Tulsa World and the Daily Oklahoman, Cate has decided to transfer from the program. Given the fact that head coach Mike Gundy said it was “Brandon’s job to lose” heading into spring practice, Cate’s decision is not all that surprising.
Over the course of his time in Stillwater, Cates played in a total of seven games and attempted a mere 14 passes.
It’s uncertain where Cates may ultimately end up. During the recruiting process, he was a commitment to LSU for a few months until switching his verbal to the Cowboys. His main recruiter at the time was then-Tiger offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, so Florida State might be an option based on familiarity.
Larry Fedora helped in the flipping of Cates’ commitment to OSU, so Southern Miss might be another possibility.
