One of the top young cornerbacks in the country saw most of his sophomore season wiped away because of an injury aggravation. Unfortunately, the injury bug has slammed headfirst into the player yet again.
Virginia Tech announced Monday that Brandon Facyson sustained a broken fibula and tibia in his left leg during practice Sunday. The defensive back underwent surgery the same day to repair the damage.
As a result, Facyson will not only miss Tech’s Military Bowl game against Cincinnati Dec. 27, but he has already been ruled out of spring practice as well. Tech expects Facyson back for the start of summer camp next August.
Facyson missed most of spring practice earlier this year because of a “stress reaction” in his left tibia, ultimately undergoing surgery a month later. He returned for summer camp and started the first three games of the 2014 season, but aggravated the lingering issue in his left leg and did not play the remainder of the year.
In 2013 as a true freshman, Facyson was tied for 18th in the country with five interceptions. For that performance, Facyson was named third-team All-ACC and earned numerous freshman All-American honors.
The football program will file an appeal for a medical redshirt for Facyson that would give the player another season of eligibility at his disposal, an appeal that’s a no-brainer to be approved.
