Way back in early December, UMass announced that Charley Molnar was leaving his position as Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator to become the Minutemen’s head coach.
As it turns out, Molnar will have a second very familiar face when he opens his first summer camp at the school in a month or two.
In a press release, UMass confirmed a couple of week’s worth of speculation that wide receiver Deion Walker (pictured) has decided to transfer into the fledgling Div. 1-A (FBS) football program. Walker spent the past four seasons at Notre Dame, two of them with Molnar as his coordinator.
“We are very excited about having Deion join us for the upcoming season,” said Molnar in a statement. “Having worked with Deion at Notre Dame, he is a terrific person and will make the most of this opportunity. Along with Hafis Williams and Michael Cox, Deion will also be able to make an immediate impact on the program - both on and off the field.”
Per the release, “Walker will be eligible to play immediately as he redshirted his true freshman year in 2008 while being on the active roster in 2009-11.” Walker has also received his degree from Notre Dame.
As a redshirt junior last season, Walker played in two games.
Williams and Cox, who were mentioned in Molnar’s statement, transferred to UMass from Notre Dame and Michigan, respectively, earlier this year.
