KIFFIN DIDN’T REALLY FIRE ANYBODY

Lane Kiffin is doing his best at making everybody think he’s an idiot. Perhaps that’s part of the plan, because otherwise he’s the coaching equivalent of Dunder Mifflin’s Michael Scott. In this week’s Sports Illustrated, John Ed Bradley wrote a piece about the “brazen coach” who is “raiding SEC foes for assistants, running off staffers, and accusing a major rival of a recruiting violation."Yet Kiffin is quickly turning into a trainwreck in the public relations game that is today’s world of college football. After getting egg in his face over the whole Urban Meyer is a cheater thing, you’d think that Kiffin would put it on lock down. Now word comes that Kiffin, who in the SI piece describes why when his ride at the airport was late, he fired the “guy who was in charge of the guy who’d been sent to pick me up."His rationale? “Here’s the point: We need to win,” Kiffin said. “That’s 25 minutes that Nick Saban and Urban Meyer had that I lost because somebody was late picking me up at the airport."Fiery words by the new leader of Rocky Top. Only it turns out that they weren’t true either. Now word comes from UT athletic director Mike Hamilton that Kiffin didn’t fire anyone."If he said he has fired somebody, that’s not true. I don’t know if he said it from a standpoint of making a point that ‘We’ve got to get this right.’ But he didn’t fire anybody. You can’t just fire anybody at Tennessee, particularly when you’re talking about non-contract employees. There’s a process."While UT’s director of public relations says that Kiffin had fired the person at the time of the interview, he had a change of heart about the incident and “decided that was not in the best interest of Tennessee."It’s getting to the point where you can only just shake your head and wait for something else to come out. Just think... he’s still undefeated at Tennessee.
