It appears that Vanderbilt defense is for real. At least when Greyson Lambert throws the ball.
The Virginia transfer missed all five of his passes, including one that hit a Vanderbilt defensive back in the hands but managed to fall incomplete, before being pulled in favor of Brice Ramsey with four minutes to go in the second quarter.
Ramsey hit Sony Michel on a 15-yard swing pass on his first pass of the day. The sophomore then found tight end Jackson Harris for a 10-yard gain on his next throw, but sailed his next two passes to bring a promising drive to a scoreless end.
Despite the struggles at quarterback, though, No. 10 Georgia takes a 14-6 lead to the break thanks to its defense, special teams and a guy named Nick Chubb.
Isaiah McKenzie opened the scoring for the Bulldogs with a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown at the 4:33 mark of the first quarter, and Chubb carried the load from there. The sophomore rushed the ball 10 times for 128 yards, including a 68-yard burst. Michel gave Georgia a 14-3 lead at the 9:34 mark of the second quarter with a 31-yard scoring burst.
‘Dores quarterback Johnny McCrary completed 8-of-21 passes for 107 yards, leading drives that led to field goals of 47 and 41 yards in the second quarter. Vanderbilt kicker Tommy Openshaw missed a 43-yarder just before the half that would have pulled the Commodores within five at the break.
