Notre Dame-USC football series extended

USC vs Notre Dame

While changes may be coming to Notre Dame’s upcoming football schedules, the yearly rivalry with USC is going nowhere. USC announced the extension of the classic intersectional rivalry through the 2023 season.

The series will continue rotating seasons in Los Angeles and South Bend, with USC home games played Thanksgiving weekend and Notre Dame hosting the Trojans in mid-October.

“Not only are we pleased to be able to extend our storied series with Notre Dame, but we were able to keep the game on the traditional dates of Thanksgiving weekend in Los Angeles and mid-October in South Bend,” Trojans athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement. “Adding the series with BYU, which is a great matchup for the fans of both teams and for all college football fans, helped us in that regard.”

The Irish weren’t the only party juggling scheduling challenges. The Trojans needed to work in the Pac-12 Championship game, which made scheduling a game the first weekend in December an impossibility. That likely means finding a new home for some games against crosstown rival UCLA.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick has been steadfast in keeping both USC and Stanford on the schedule, with road trips alternating between the locations on Thanksgiving weekend.

After two long winning streaks, first by Notre Dame and more recently by Southern Cal, the Irish have won two of the past three games, both in the Coliseum. The two teams are scheduled to meet October 19th in primetime at Notre Dame Stadium.
