It may be all the rage in Auburn and Georgia and other college towns across the country to not name a starter heading out of spring practice, but that’s not how Ralph Friedgen rolls.
At all. For now.
According to ESPN.com‘s ACC blog, Friedgen has named Jamarr Robinson as the replacement for Chris Turner and the starter for the Terrapins’ season opener against Navy. He did, however, give the “right now” caveat.
“Jamarr Robinson has had an excellent spring,” Friedgen said during the ACC’s teleconference. “He’s really matured, and I think he’s playing at a high level. Right now, he’s the starter.”
While Friedgen named Robinson as the starter, he wasn’t shy in doling out the praise to the backup, redshirt freshman Danny O’Brien, or the backup’s backup, C.J. Brown. And, in the process, seemed to fire a shot across Robinson’s bow that he’d better take into summer camp and the regular season the stellar game he had during the spring sessions.
“I think [O’Brien] is really mature for his age and is probably very advanced for this stage, when he hasn’t played at all,” Friedgen said. “He’s not too far behind Robinson. C.J. Brown is a kid who has a lot of tools. He’s very mobile and he can throw the ball. He’s behind the others in terms of understanding [the offense], but I think in time he’s going to be a good quarterback.”
Robinson started two games in 2009 and played in a total of seven as Turner’s backup.
