The Raiders worked out free agent TE Fendi Onobun on Wednesday.
A former sixth-round pick, Onobun was waived by the Bills last week. Onobun checks in at an impressive 6-foot-6, 249 pounds, but has just two catches in four career games. He’s a stronger candidate for the practice squad than 53-man roster.
  • FA Tight End #48
    Jaguars signed TE Fendi Onobun.
Onobun had been on the Redskins’ practice squad. He was active three times for the Rams last season, making two catches for 15 yards. He should be used on special teams and as a spare blocker in Jacksonville.
  • FA Tight End #48
Bills signed TE Fendi Onobun from the Jaguars’ practice squad.
That was quick. Onobun was just re-signed to Jacksonville’s practice squad Friday morning. His signing is a clear signal that starter Scott Chandler (ankle) will be unavailable for the Chargers game. Onobun has more receiving skills than Lee Smith, but he’s far from guaranteed to be active on Sunday.
  • FA Tight End #48
    Jaguars waived TE Fendi Onobun.
The former college hoopster played in just one game with Jacksonville, failing to record a catch. He’s yet to hone his prodigious athletic gifts into a reliable football skill-set.

The Chicago Tribune thinks TE Fendi Onobun could have a “significant role” on the Bears if he continues to perform as well as he has this offseason.
Onobun, a former basketball player, has always been known as a workout warrior who shines without pads on. He was a sixth-round pick of the Rams in 2010, and the Bears are his sixth NFL team. Onobun is long on athleticism, but he’s never been able to translate it to the field and we doubt he will in Chicago.
  • FA Tight End #48
Bears signed TE Fendi Onobun to a reserve/future contract.
Onobun has bounced all over the league after being a sixth-round pick of the Rams in 2010. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound tight end played four years of basketball at the University of Arizona before joining the Houston Cougars football team in 2009. Onobun brings along his athleticism but has just two career catches.
  • FA Tight End #48
The Chicago Tribune believes Bears TE Fendi Onobun’s roster chances are “dwindling.”
Onobun was a minicamp and OTAs star in shorts and a t-shirt, but his play predictably fell off once the pads came on. He’s been targeted five times this preseason but has zero catches to his name. Onobun has been dropping too many passes, and he had a brutal one in Friday night’s game against the Raiders when there wasn’t an Oakland defender anywhere near him.
  • FA Tight End #48
Bears signed TE Fendi Onobun, TE Zach Miller, QB Jerrod Johnson, DB Sean Cattouse, OT Rogers Gaines, LS Brandon Hartson, DB Demontre Hurst, DT Tracy Robertson, WR Terrence Toliver, DB C.J. Wilson, and LB Lawrence Wilson to reserve/future contracts.
The latter eight each finished the season on the Bears’ practice squad. Onobun spent last offseason with Chicago, as did Johnson.
  • FA Tight End #48
    Bears released TE Fendi Onobun.
Onobun’s release comes after a drop-filled minicamp. An annual t-shirt and shorts star, Onobun couldn’t even make it to camp this year. Onobun’s lone two regular-season receptions came all the way back in 2010 with the Rams.
  • FA Tight End #48
    Jaguars signed TE Fendi Onobun.
Onobun keeps getting chances in the league thanks to his 6-foot-6 basketball frame and 4.45 jets. He looks the part in a t-shirt and gym shorts. Unfortunately for him, it’s never translated to pads. Onobun is entering one of the league’s weakest tight end depth charts in Jacksonville. It’s now or never for Onobun.
