A hole-in-one during competition sometimes earns a player an extra prize - and in an event sponsored by a car manufacturer, hopes might be raised.
Sadly for Edoardo Molinari, poor timing left him with a scaled-down version of a larger, more useful award.
Molinari is playing this week at the BMW Masters in China, where tournament organizers are offering a new BMW i8 sports sedan to any player who aces the par-3 17th. The Italian recorded a 1 on his scorecard Thursday, but it didn’t come at No. 17. Molinari’s ace was on the 208-yard fourth hole, where he used a 4-iron.
That meant no sports car, although he didn’t walk away empty-handed: Molinari instead received a miniature, remote-controlled car that also came with a magnum of champagne.
“Now I have the little car,” said Molinari, who sits five shots off the lead after a 2-under 70. “I want to win the big one.”
