ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – We’re not saying that the two courses hosting this week’s RSM Classic are playing easy, but when Lucas Glover completed his first-round 66 he was mad because “we were being lapped.”
Rookie Mackenzie Hughes continued his onslaught on Friday, following his first-round 61 on the Seaside Course with a 67 on the adjacent Plantation layout to take a two-stroke lead at 14 under.
“Today was a little more work, but I would take two more of those in a heartbeat,” said Hughes, the only player without a bogey this week.
C.T. Pan moved into second place with a 64 on the Seaside Course, while four players are tied at 11 under, including Chad Campbell (65) and Hudson Swafford (67).

Hughes’ 36-hole total is two strokes better than the previous tournament record and the scoring average (68.17) for two days on the Seaside layout is more than two strokes less than at this point last year (70.64).
That scoring assault may not last if Sunday’s forecast holds. Winds on Saturday and Sunday are predicted to reach 20 mph with temperatures not getting above 60 degrees for the final round.
“I wouldn’t mind it playing harder on the weekend,” said Chesson Hadley, who was tied for third after a second-round 66 on the Plantation Course. “I like it. Let’s get it hard and let’s get some bad attitudes out there. I’m all for that.”
