Arguably the biggest misconception among beginning and average golfers is that you have to hit up on the ball to get it in the air.

In actuality, however, trying to do that prohibits a player from shifting their weight toward the target on the downswing, which will lead to all sorts of ball-striking inconsistency.

As 12-time PGA Tour winner Paul Azinger explains in this video, what you really want to feel is that you’re hitting down on the ball and that your weight is moving forward through the shot.

So emulate the great Gary Player the next time you’re hitting balls and try the step-through drill. You’ll make a better weight shift and hit more solid shots.
