DJ vs Lefty Compelling POY scenario

Thumbnail

The PGA Tour Player of the Year race is still surprisingly wide open heading to the FedEx Cup Playoffs’ finale at the Tour Championship next week.

Dustin Johnson, Ernie Els, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Hunter Mahan and Justin Rose are frontrunners given they are the only two-time PGA Tour winners this year.

Of all the compelling possibilities still out there, here’s a tough one to ponder: It’s a possible Johnson vs. Phil Mickelson vote.

If Johnson wins the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup, he’s a lock to win Player of the Year honors. In fact, he could be POY even if he fails to win the Tour Championship but claims the FedEx Cup. He would have two victories this year, plus the FedEx Cup.

If Phil Mickelson wins the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup, he’s got to be voted POY. With the Masters in his hip pocket, it’s got to be more than enough, given nobody else will have won more than two events this year.

But what about this? What if Mickelson wins the Tour Championship but Dustin Johnson finishes second and Johnson wins the FedEx Cup? Mickelson will have two titles this year, including a major. Johnson will have two titles and the FedEx Cup. Who do you like in that scenario?
