ATLANTA – Jim Furyk tees off at East Lake at 1:50 p.m. (ET), one stroke and 2,870 projected points behind leader Paul Casey in the “Race for $10 Million.” Not that Furyk has much interest in revisiting what happened at the Barclays last month, but his current position makes it impossible not to ask, “What if?”
Had Furyk not been disqualified for missing his pro-am tee time by no more than 10 minutes – a rule that has since been suspended by the PGA Tour – it’s not a stretch to think that he would be among the elite five at East Lake that can claim the FedEx Cup with a victory.
“It was like missing a cut. Anything I would have done would have helped put me in a better position and given me a better seed,” Furyk said following his opening 67. “But it happened, it’s done with. I’ve kind of put it to rest.”
It’s no surprise the veteran has taken the high road on the issue. For $10 million we’re not sure “Shag Bag” would be as forgiving.
