I’ve got to tell you, this is my favorite week of the year. And that’s tough to admit for someone that grew up a few hours drive from Augusta. But links golf is in my blood and has been since I was 20 years old.
On a trip that my grandmother financed back in 1988, I got my first look at the great links courses of Ireland and Scotland. Balybunnion, Lahinch, Carnoustie, Turnberry, Royal Troon, and yes St. Andrews were all on my rota.
On that same trip I managed to qualify for the Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St. Annes. I missed the cut by a mile but it was an experience that shaped a life long appreciation of links golf and that’s why this week I won’t have to set an alarm to get up early to watch the Open.
Just like my kids on Christmas morning.
