Phil Mickelson will miss the Pink Out Saturday at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, but he says he’ll take part in more than spirit.
Mickelson, who will miss his first cut in almost 14 months after posting a 3-over-par 73 Friday, told Golf Channel’s Mike Ritz that he will return home to be with his wife, Amy, but he’ll still participate in the Pink Out from long distance. The Pink Out is a fundraiser for the foundation Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
“I’ll be wearing pink tomorrow in San Diego,” Mickelson said on Golf Channel.
Mickelson’s wife and his mother, Mary, were both diagnosed with breast cancer last year. Players, caddies and others at Colonial honored them and others in the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink attire in the event’s first Pink Out last year.
“It’s one of the coolest things that’s ever been done for myself, Amy and all of the women who have breast cancer,’ Mickelson said. ‘This is a very cool, emotional support system that Colonial membership, Tour wives and tournament directors have done for everyone. So although I will not be here to partake in it, I will be wearing pink tomorrow.”
The missed cut ended Mickelson’s streak of consecutive cuts made at 21, which was the longest active streak on the PGA Tour. Lee Westwood takes over with the longest active streak with 15 consecutive cuts made.
“I just played terrible,” Mickelson said. “It’s a good barometer for me, knowing starting my U.S. Open run, which is here, I’ve got a lot of work to do.”
The U.S. Open is in three weeks. Mickelson is scheduled to play at the Memorial next week.
