PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Tom Watson’s working hard to make sure he isn’t playing his final round in a U.S. Open.
With a birdie at the sixth hole, he made the turn to the back nine Friday at 6-over for the championship. At the time, it was good for a tie for 93rd. The low 60 scores and ties make the cut but so does anyone within 10 shots of the lead. Watson made the turn eight shots off the lead.
Watson, 60, who won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in 1982, is playing his 31st and likely his last U.S. Open. He got in this year on a special exemption. If he misses the cut, his final U.S. Open hole will be the 18th at Pebble Beach, just as it was for Jack Nicklaus when Nicklaus played his final U.S. Open in 2000. Watson said he fully expects this will be his last U.S. Open.
