CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Call it the bright orange elephant in the room. So much so that Rickie Fowler was waiting for it following his opening 66 at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Do you feel any pressure to get that first victory?
“I won . . . in Korea . . . I beat Rory (McIlroy),” he laughed.
While the 2011 Kolon Korea Open may qualify as a “W,” the fact that he remains winless on the PGA Tour is a surprise to many who predicted big things for him when he joined the circuit in 2010.
So far in 2012 Fowler has been close, including a tie for seventh at the Honda Classic and last week’s tie for 10th Zurich Classic. But it was who closed the deal in New Orleans that may motivate Fowler even more.
“Look at (Zurich champion Jason) Dufner,” said Fowler, whose Thursday 66 is his lowest opening round this year. “Look at how many times he’d been close. In a way it all has to fall into place. You’re going to have to get some good bounces and be a little lucky.”
