Having made the cut in each of his first two career PGA Tour starts, 14-year-old Guan Tianlang will not be around to play the weekend at the HP Byron Nelson Championship after a 7-over 77 Friday.
Guan, who played all four rounds at both the Masters and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last month, entered the second round at TPC Four Seasons with a chance to make the cut, having fired an even-par 70 in his opening round. Playing this week on a sponsor exemption, the teen began on the back nine Friday and went out in 6-over 41, derailed by a stretch of five straight bogeys from Nos. 14-18. He went on to play the next eight holes in 1 under, but closed with a double bogey on the par-4 ninth.

Guan finished the first two rounds at 7-over 147, and with the projected cut vacillating between even par and 1 under Friday afternoon, he will miss out on a tee time this weekend by several shots. Despite Friday’s setback, it remains an impressive six-week stretch for the Chinese sensation, who first gained notoriety by claiming the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship last November at just 13 years of age.
With his week at TPC Four Seasons now behind him, Guan is not yet done teeing it up alongside professionals in the Dallas area. His next appearance will be at the 36-hole U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Lakewood Country Club on June 3, where he will be among the hopefuls vying for a spot in the season’s second major.
