Mark Steinberg, Tiger Woods’ agent, was arrested in New York state Saturday night on drunk-driving charges, according to Bloomberg News. Golf Channel confirmed the report.
Steinberg was one of 11 people stopped by the Ardsley, N.Y., Police Dept. at a sobriety checkpoint off the New York State Thruway. He was charged with DWI and aggravated DWI for having a blood-alcohol count greater than .18 percent.
The legal limit in New York is .08.
“He did inform us who he was,” Ardsley Police Sergeant Dave Fisher said in a telephone interview with Bloomberg. “It is what it is. He was intoxicated.”
Steinberg, in an email to Bloomberg, said “it’s a medical issue that I was dealing with. It’s not what you think.” But Fisher told Bloomberg that Steinberg never mentioned a medical problem.
“It was alcohol related,” Fisher said. “He submitted to a chemical test to determine alcohol-blood content and he failed that test.”
Steinberg, 44, was released without bail, Fisher told Bloomberg news.
Following Woods’ victory at the Memorial he was asked if he knew of Steinberg’s arrest before the final round.
‘Yes, I did,’ Woods said. ‘And no comment.’
Attempts by Golf Channel to reach Steinberg for comment were unsuccessful.
